April Meeting Topic:  Critical and objective thinking in project management

Speaker:  Jon M. Quigley, PMP, CTFL

There are a good many cognitive biases that can impact discerning the truth or what is valid and true. Yet knowing what is valid and true is important for any business decision and especially for project managers, that are often part of decision arm and execution arm of the business objectives. In this presentation, we will review the need for critical and objective thinking in the project management discipline, along with some obstacles that come with the demands of the organization upon its people.

Jon M. Quigley PMP CTFL is a principal and founding member of Value Transformation, a product development training (from idea to product retirement) and cost improvement organization established in 2009.  Jon has an Engineering Degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and two Master’s Degrees from City University of Seattle. Jon has thirty years of product development and manufacturing experience, ranging from embedded hardware and software through verification and project management.

Jon has won awards such as the Volvo-3P Technical Award in 2005 going on to win the 2006 Volvo Technology Award. Jon has secured seven US patents and several international patents. These patents range from human machine interfaces to telemetry systems and driver’s aides. Jon is on the Western Carolina University Master of Project Management Advisory Board as well as Forsyth Technical Community College Advisory Board. He has also been a guest lecturer on Project Management at Wake Forest University's Charlotte NC campus. Jon teaches Project Management classes at City University of Seattle via distance learning. Jon is an expert at ITMPI (IT Metrics and Productivity Institute) giving webinars on project management and product development topics. He is part of the Pm2Go experts (The Standish Group) and has given webinars at The Project Management Institute and spoken before PMI Chapters across North Carolina and parts of Virginia.

Jon has membership in ASQ, SAE, AIAG and PMI (holding Project Management Professional Certification) and has spoken at numerous PMI events.  Jon also has the CTFL certification from ISTQB. Jon is the co-author or contributed to the books:

Community Chapter Meeting 

As a means of helping chapter and local community members who are certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP®) satisfy the continuing education requirements for re-certification, PMI Metrolina Chapter arranges its monthly meeting schedule to allow a 1 hour PDU training session to be incorporated into its normal meeting.

Topics presented during these sessions are designed to not only satisfy the PDU requirement for re-certifying as a PMP, but to also provide wide appeal to people involved in project management regardless of whether or not they are certified PMPs. The 1-hour sessions meet the educational requirements to qualify for 1 PDU credits for maintaining PMP® certification or to meet the requirement for attending 35 hours of formal project management education prior to applying to sit for the PMP® exam.

The sessions are open to all.
