Theme: "How to Deal with the Complexities of Project Management and Survive"

Presenter:  Dr. Valerie Denney, PMP

Have you ever been faced with a complex, multi-dimensional project and pressure from multiple stakeholders? Is this the normal course of business in your organization? Are you at wits end?  Have you ever wondered if you are alone?  If so, this discussion is for you. In this session, we will review some of the tools and resources  that PMI has to help in ethical decision making, and discuss some scenarios.  Part of a healthy ethical environment on a project is being able to talk about it openly.  Let’s practice and have some fun along the way.

Valerie Denney is a member of the PMI Global Leadership team and part of the Ethics Member Advisory Group (EMAG). Dr. Denney is a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Decision Sciences in the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University- Worldwide. Dr. Denney teaches both the Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Project Management (BSPM and MSPM).

Dr. Denney has a Doctorate of Business Administration with a specialization in Management of Engineering and Technology from Northcentral University; a Master’s of Science in Technical Program Management from the Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering; and a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Rochester. She received her Project Management Professional (PMP)® in 2003.

Dr. Denney’s research interests are in complex decision making using qualitative methods. Specific topics of interest include business ethics and success criteria, risk management (with a focus on opportunity management), stakeholder engagement, and academic integrity. She has a passion for spreading her knowledge and excitement about everything project management.

Dr. Denney is a Navy veteran and was commissioned through the NROTC program. Dr. Denney retired from Lockheed Martin after a demonstrated 30-year record of accomplishment of winning executable business, planning to assure program success, risk management and project execution with solid financial acuity. As a 20+-year project and program manager, she managed a wide variety of domains including satellite development, ground control stations, surface ships, electronic warfare, and unmanned underwater vehicles. She was responsible for a portfolio of over US$500 million.

Dr. Denney lives in Fort Mill, SC with her husband of 38 years, and a few fur babies. She enjoys needlecrafts, gardening, and watching her daughter play NCAA lacrosse. She is proud of her son who recently graduated from the University of South Carolina and is an event planner and marketing specialist, in Columbia, SC.

Community Meeting Information:

Meeting will start at 6:30pm so please arrive 15 minutes prior. Location will be added at a later date. 

This is a working meeting designed for PMI Chapter members northeast of the city including the University City area.

Community Chapter Meeting 

As a means of helping chapter and local community members who are certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP®) satisfy the continuing education requirements for re-certification, PMI Metrolina Chapter arranges its monthly meeting schedule to allow a 1 hour PDU training session to be incorporated into its normal meeting.

Topics presented during these sessions are designed to not only satisfy the PDU requirement for re-certifying as a PMP, but to also provide wide appeal to people involved in project management regardless of whether or not they are certified PMPs. The 1-hour sessions meet the educational requirements to qualify for 1 PDU credits for maintaining PMP® certification or to meet the requirement for attending 35 hours of formal project management education prior to applying to sit for the PMP® exam.

The sessions are open to all.
